Yesterday, I came across this article from the Greenslade blog. It seems like journalists are now aiming for new media coverage rather than just the usual newspapers. This is easily an example of the globalisation of new media. Maybe since the internet is a great tool at allowing others to see news from overseas much easier, but personally, I still feel it is better to read it on paper rather than the computer screen. The eyes would not have that much strain from looking at the computer screen for so long. Besides, even though anyone can access news articles through the Net, if there is no known list of news websites from different countries for us to choose from, it may be hard to read about the articles posted there.

Hey Siling!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you; hardprint is easier on the eyes. However, in a way, the Internet is actually more environmentally-friendly dont you think? (: I think media companies want to reach a greater range of audience too, since there are families who dont buy newspapers.
Yes the Internet is a tool that has a far wider reach, especially if one is trying to reach the younger crowd. However i also agree that paper is easier to read. Manga still sells despite the existence of scanlations. Plus, if you refer to my blog entry on death hoaxes, you will know how easy it is to pose as a creditable newspaper online and send out wrong information. Hence, hardprint is still overall more trustworthy because we know certain technologies are needed to mass produce newspapers while the internet is a relatively easy tool to manipulate.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteAiMing:
As you said, nowadays people are more environment-conscious, and it is in the companies' best interest to have more readers they can reach out to as compared to the printed newspapers. But by switching to new media, don't you find that there is a danger of us depending everything onto the Internet? It is a scary thought, to learn everything from cyberspace. This is why I find a moderation of both is the best.
YingHui:
It is true that internet information are easy to manipulate. Wikipedia just need log-in users to change the content. But this boils down to the integrity of the people using the internet. Maybe if there are more measures to keep people from putting up false information, internet news can be very useful.
Hi Siling!
ReplyDeletePersonally, I do prefer to read the news from printed sources, instead of from computerized sources. This is because apart from what you mentioned that it is more straining on the eyes, going to the Internet to read the news might also result in our laptops getting infected with viruses! However, like what you said, there must a balance between both avenues as our society is moving into an 'IT stage'. So maybe we could have the more important news on printed sources and upload the less important news on the Internet? =)
